January ~ family and sewing

The Lord blessed me with a new grandson this month. He had a slightly bumpy start but is doing well now. Here he is with his 2 brothers and my husband (PaPa).

PaPa and I have gotten to spend some time with with Anthony and Brady at the park in Floridatown.

The boys loved walking by the water and riding the plane.

I have gotten a small amount of sewing in

HOF for a TBL2 friend's new great granddaughter

Last is my ufo project for January. It is Grant's baby quilt. It will not be finished for January but maybe in the next couple of days. I made the blocks with my local Little Red Hens bee a couple of years ago. A few days before Grant was born I decided to make a quilt for him with the blocks. I finished the top before he was born and basted the layers on his birth day (12th). I have been hand quilting it as I can since. 2 more blocks and the border to quilt and then the binding.

FMQ Post Card

Free Motion Quilting Post Card

For those that are interested in making postcards from their FMQ samples I will try to show you how easy it is to do. Here is my sample I am going to use.

This was my Tiles sample from July that AngelaWalters taught at Sew Cal Gal. Click on names to find out more.

Next I rough cut my piece to about 4 ½” x 6 ½”

Also cut a piece of muslin and with my stiff inside (I am using Floriani Stitch and Shape double side fusible) I have used a heavy interfacing and steam a seam in the past.

Next, I ironed my muslin to the back of the stabilizer

and my sample to the front side.

Then I trim my post card to 4” x 6”

Next I satin stitched around the edge with a narrow stitch.

I then stitch around it again once or twice with a wider satin stitch. It doesn’t have to be done this way. It is just how I do it.

I then do any final details.

And then finish the back.

Bonus FMQ by Teri Lucus

December's bonus free motion quilting at SewCalGal was given by Teri Lucus. It was on using a software program Kaleidoscope Kreator 3 Software and its feathered package. It looks like it would be fun to use. Teri/SewCalGal provided a pdf to print out to do the challenge, but I don’t have the extra ink. So I printed out the outline drawing and then enlarged the print. I was going to use it to do my piece. But then I decided to go back and read the tutorial again. In the very last part it has handout with instructions to create feathers I used this and folded my piece of paper for a snowflake. Then I drew my feather on one sixth of the snowflake.

Then I took my fabric and folded it into quarters and pressed it. Next, I took and traced the section on my fabric six times giving me a beautiful spiral of feathers. Not exactly sure it is a kaleidoscope of feathers. Then layered and quilted my piece.

FMQ Challenge: Machine Trapunto

SewCalGal has had a Free Motion Quilt Challenge for 2012.

I have had a a lot of fun improving my machine quilting skills. Thank you so much for hosting this challenge. Thank you to all the teachers for your tutorials. This has been quite a bit of work for them and Sew Cal Gal. Thank you!!!!!
Today I decided to do another one of the extra challenges here given by Diane Loomis was the instructor for machine Trapunto. It was give out in October... So I am running behind a Bit and on the last day of the challenge my piece is still slightly wet. It is not perfect, some small spots (2) of extra quilting to sew down scissor nips >ouch<

Dec FMQ Challenge

This months free motion quilting challenge at SewCalGal was given by Patsy Thompson what wonderful way to end the challenge. It was all about borders and how to make them interesting and exciting. I began my challenge by doing a lot of the doodling on the border sheets. back and fronts I also doodled in the air and my dear husband would say are you free motioning? To which I would reply yes. I then marked my fabric with borders, worked on 1 or 2 borders, set it aside and thought about what I wanted to do next. I did the quilting in 6 settings. I had to take out part of the last border because I got turned around and did feathers in the wrong part. When I finished the borders I decided on the center. Leah Day's Star Flower to complement the Leah's star flower bands (ribbon).

Thank you Patsy for your wonderful lesson. I can hardly believe I was able to complete my piece & I love it. Thank you Sew Cal Gal for hosting this challenge and all your hard work...

Free motion quilting challenge 2012

This year I followed along with SewCalGal FMQ 2012 challenge it has been fun most of the time, but also frustrating. I have learned to practice drawing my quilting, not to out sew my machine, try new threads and fabrics along with other things. I found many new friends that want to machine quilt better. I learned (still learning) to relax while machine quilting.If I am having a problem think about what I am doing.

Adventures in Hawaiian Appliqué

“I don’t want to go home with Pupula Haole”

Hawaiian Appliqué Quilt

For this year’s Little Red Hen challenge, I wanted to make a pineapple quilt.

When I was a little girl, I lived in Hawaii. One of my childhood memories of Hawaii was a beautiful Pineapple quilt. In looking for a pattern for a Pineapple Hawaiian quilt. I found out that not only was the technique of how they are made, but they are to have special meaning to the maker. So I decided to design my own, Pineapples had to be the main focus. Next it had to have sausage fruits representing the weird fruits from the Sausage tree and also, some islands, these items are part of my memories from Hawaii.

For the hand quilting I outlined all the appliqué, then echo quilted portions and on the pineapples and islands did definitive quilting and finished the quilting with ocean currents in the white field.

As for the name, I used to tell my mom and dad “I didn’t want to go home with the Pupula Haole”, not realizing I was one myself.

Hand appliquéd, quilted and bound.

Cotton fabric, 80/20 Hobbs batting.
