WIP'D and progress report

WIP'D report:

I completed my messenger bag.

Back in December I bought 2 pairs of pants at a yard sale. They both were 4" too long and I have just been rolling them up....I know I'm a seamstress/quilter, but the quilter wins out on my own stuff. But last night I decided to take the time to hem both pairs. Ya! they both look and feel much better.

Please excuse the extra strings.

The next item is still a secret so I can only show partial pics. It is a mug rug. The quilter I'm swapping with said she likes purple, lilac, blue, and also loves applique.

I also finished my zentangle post card for a swap on TBLOVER2

Zentangles are totally new to me. And drawing(stitching) them on fabric was difficult until I thought about it as quilting.

Free Motion Quilt Challenge -Jan

I am participating in SewCalGal Free Motion Challenge

Well I'm finding out it is a lot harder to free motion quilt by moving the fabric instead of moving my machine. I'm doing this quilting on my Janome 9700. I practiced on paper 1st and I kept on blocking myself in. Finially I decided to just go ahead and try on the machine.

This was my 1st try. I need lots more practice.

Overall, I think this one is better, but still need lots of practice.

Goldie was one of my beagles I rescued when she was 5 months old back in 2004. She is now my son's doggy. Flash our Dachshund, jack terrier, mountain cur mix dog played the part of sneaky neighbor dog. So we have pups. Not really what we wanted at all, but ... they are cute.

Last week my crazy body decided to act up, so my sewing and quilting have been slowed down considerably.

I'm finishing up the hand quilting on my friends Double Wedding Ring only the white parts.

Sunday- a little hand quilting on Betty's DWR (1 square,4 melons, 2 cones)
Monday- nothing
Tuesday- a little more hand quilting DWR (3 squares, 6 melons, 1 cone)

Wednesday- sewed strips on 8 quilt blocks for LRH charity quilt
and cut out my messenger tote

Thursday - hemmed 3 pairs of pants and made
my Jan block for TBLovers2

My sewing and quilting goals are to finish more of my ufos.

Thimbleberries Safe Haven Quilt

I did this quilt with my local quilting TB/Moda Bee. We decided to make the Safe Haven quilt as our group project for 2011. I used Thimbleberries fabrics from my stash (at least I think all the fabric is TB). This is the largest quilt that I have machine quilted. I actually had it half quilted when I decided I did not like the way the quilting was turning out and I took out the quilting on 4 of the houses and redid them. I am very happy with the results.

Wedding Quilt

When I was 14 yrs old my Mother-in-law taught me the basics of quilting. I decided I wanted to make a quilt for my hope chest. Mom mostly made utility quilts meaning we used the materials on hand. Pieces were from worn out clothing using the parts that were still good or left over scraps from making clothing. Usually the quilt pieces were as large as they could be (cut into squares or rectangles) then sewn together to make the tops. Some times the backs were made the same way.The batting we were using was creslan (sp?). I was white kind of fluffy, but it had hard spots that could not be sewn through. Quilting stitches a lot of the time were an inch apart to sew through the layers.

My love of quilting came from my grandma, she made beautiful pieced quilts using lots of different quilt designs. Her quilts were made from clothing scraps also, but she always had pretty designs. So when I began my quilt I wanted to at least cut my squares small... well I guess 5" squares aren't really small, but it was small enough that my future Mom-in-law fussed at me about wasting time. Here of some pictures of my wedding quilt. It was the 1st quilt I made mostly by my self, if I remember right my husband helped me quilt it. I don't have any pictures of the quilt until at least a year after I was married.

Me playing with Scott. Here the wedding quilt was being used as padding. The small square quilt, Scott is laying on was a store bought quilt (top was one piece).

Here it is again about 7 or 8 years latter, with my 2nd son, David.

I still have the quilt, but it is in really rough shape. I was used and loved by each member of my family. For a while it was used for some pets, then I decided I wanted to keep it to use as examples in quilt classes.

I'm so thankful to my mom-in-law for teaching me the basics of quilting and for the example of her life.

My Little Red Hens Quilt Challenge

While blog hopping the last couple of days, I realized I missed blogging. So I am going to try this again.

So a couple of blogs back I mention the Little Red Hen’s quilt challenge.

I really didn’t like my greeting card.

Finally in November I got serious and made a line drawing.

I sort of liked it….So started pulling fabrics from my stash,

playing with the colors and fabrics, cutting and pinning in

place. At 1^st I had a muted grey for the background….Yuk…

That was what I hated about the card the dull gloomy

background. Once I used the sea green marble fabric, I was

able to complete the quilt.

My first finished quilt project for 2011.

I love the way this mini mystery turned out.

Today I went to my LRH bee meeting. I came away with a couple of new projects. The first one involves this card. I am to make a quilt with it being my inspiration. It reminds me of fall ...

The next project involves a pledge and a ufo challenge.

So the pledge is to finish my red, white and blue challenge quilt before July.

And last project is a ufo challenge and it is to finish my pink and turquoise cancer quilt before December.

These projects are with my Little Red Hens quilting Bee.

Not sure what happened with the date on the last post but it was only 2 or 3 days ago.
It is late or early depending on how one thinks about it. But I figured if I'm really trying to blog again I better not let too many days pass. So here are a couple of pictures.

A New Year!

First I want to praise the Lord Jesus Christ for saving my soul and being my comfort and strength. He is faithful and just.

It has been over a year since I posted. I am going to try blogging again.

The last year was spent way too much of the time with doctors , hospitals and such stuff.

The year also brought me great joy as well, The Lord worked it out so my Dad could visit me and relations be repaired and renewed between him and my husband. We had a wonderful visit.

On Nov 14 the Lord gave me another Grandson, Brady. Now I get to play and watch Anthony and Brady. Truly a great blessing to me, that my son and daughter-in-law give me this privilege and that God has given me the health to be able.

In Dec I was able to visit with my other grandson, Daniel. This is another great blessing and answer to prayers. I continue to pray that God will allow us to spend more time with Daniel.

My Mominlaw is still with us. I still take care of her, but I now have more help. My sisterinlaw and botherinlaw and husband take turns with me (Her children) .

Lady

Lady was my first beagle. She was a wonderful momma dog. She loved puppies and thought they were all hers. She even raised one litter of grand babies when her daughter suddenly died. Her favorite treat was bacon. She loved hunting and tracking but couldn't do much because of bad allergic reactions to poison ivy. She thought it was marvelous to go out with us target shooting. She also was very good with children and loved to play with them as long as they understood which toys were hers. She loved to get her nails clipped and get baths and ride in the car. We went to a many of yard sales and she always knew the beany squirrels were for her.

A short time ago Kim from TBlovers2 got me interested in making quilty post cards. They are lots of fun to make and don't take to long to complete.

Here are a couple I made from my winnings from FAbLoversSwap UFO challenge.

This is one I made and sent as a thank you to the quilter that donated the winnings

And this post card is for a swap on TBLovers2.

Next is my Star Swirl W/U challenge quilt for the N2Quilting group. It only needed the binding sewn on to complete it. So it is now finished.

The last pictures are of my FabLoversSwap Heartfelt 2009 Anniversary Wall Quilt. We swapped 6 in heart blocks.

As to what I am working on right now. I am hand quilting a table topper for a very dear friend. No pics right now.

Quilts, Blocks & More

Here are a few pictures of things I've been working on the last couple of months. The first is a baby quilt for my soon to be born Grand son. Look closely, the border quilting has dog leashes made from beige grossgrain ribbon.

Next is a memory quilt. My TBLovers group ladies sent me 6" HOF (hearts of friendship) blocks. After my step dad died. Earlier this month Kim our group leader gave me a nudge to make the blocks into a quilt.

Next is another Shadow Trapunto mini quilt I designed and made using Geta's method. And a very small sample I made to show the steps.

Here are some HOF I've made for others in my group. Sometimes we do make other shapes. The house is one.

Also some lottery blocks for TBLovers2.

Next are some post cards I made for a swap in FLS.

Theme was Garden.

This is my block for July for the Thimbleberries Moda bee Challenge.

On Tuesday my car was hit with the quick cart a Wal-Mart. It will be getting fixed shortly.

Joys of Life

Picture is Mom on last day at the hospital.

I know it has been long time since I blogged. June and July have been busy. The first part of June, I had quite a bit of breathing problems, coughing and wheezing. We here in Florida were having the hottest June on record. Mom (my MIL) had the house except for my room at 80 t0 100 degrees. She was very cold. I saw a couple of Doctors and they believe it is my lungs or bronchials and that I should see a pulmonary doctor. In the mean time Mom became very ill very quickly. Mom ended up in the ER and then in the hospital for eight days. Pneumonia according to the xrays there was only minimal improvement and then looking back at previous xrays...seeing the area had a small spot before and was now larger they decided to have a lung biopsy. We are still waiting for the results. We believe everything is good with her lungs though because the doctor said her lungs looked very healthy and the area in question looked like it was only scarring. Anyway Mom and I both now have a pulmonary doctor and the entire house is being kept cooler and dryer for both of us to breathe easier. Mom is recovering strength wise very well, however her memory is very confused and the dementia is getting worse daily.

Some may say how can this posting be called Joys of Life. Simple put the Lord has shown me so many things through hardships HE has had us go through. One of these, this time is that when we see no purpose to our lives. It is probably when it is the most purposeful. Mom for a long time has wanted the Lord to take her home and has felt there was no reason or purpose for her living. While reading Bible at the hospital we read I Thes 5:14

Now we exhort you breathern, warn them that are unruley, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

Putting this together with the scripture in I Corin 12 talking about the body of Christ and especially 22-23

Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

People in general look at the help and support as being the important part. Mom life although feebleminded and weak is the more important part. I count it joy and a privilege to help and support her.

Another Joy is that the Lord showed me that he gives me exactly what I need at the time I need it.

One night while lifting mom out of bed. I laughed. God pointed that out to me. Here I was hugging her, picking up her back and turning her legs out of bed, my body over hers, so that she could go potty. A couple of months ago, before my surgery, I couldn't even get myself out of my own bed without peeing myself. God is good.

I guess that is all for now. I'll blog later about my sewing and quilting.

I don't know if I have mentioned that fall is my favorite time of the year. I love the brightly colored leaves. One of my favorite ways of taking pictures is looking up through the leaves at the sky.

I love how the sky makes the the leaves sparkle.

This is how I feel about my Autumn Splendor wall hanging. The 1st picture is before washing it and the 2nd after it was washed.

Next I have been playing with some more shadow trapunto. I am very grateful to Geta for her tutorials. This one on how to make wreaths.

Today I quilted on my maple leaf wall hanging. It is almost finished.

And today I made another Post Card. Still working with the Shadow Trapunto. The rose turned out more like how I want it to look. The batik that the post cards are on was used under the organza with both post cards. The zinna has a cotton/poylester organza and the rose is polyester organza.

Next is a baby rag quilt I completed earlier this week both front and back.

Last I want to share a quilt that my Grandma Tate made. It is a double wedding ring. Lots of little bitty pieces.

Time goes on

It has been almost a month since I last wrote. I have been busy but it really has been that to write a blog takes me soooo looonnnggg to write and it isn't on my top to do list. However since I have family that checks on me here. I figured I better write some tonight.

For Mother's day my youngest son gave me 2 beautiful rose bushes. These are some of the first blossoms.

The Lord gave us this beautiful Sunflower. My husband and I have never had a sunflower plant before.

I took the photo and tweaked it and printed it on clothe and made a post card.

Another post card I made using 2 new techniques. Machine quilting pebbles...I need more practice and Shadow Trapunto.

I learned about shadow trapunto from Geta's blog http://cadouri-din-inima.blogspot.com/ while checking out Sew Mama Sew May giveaways. Geta has many beautiful quilts. I am waiting to purchase some of her patterns when they come out, but wanted to try go ahead and try this method.

Next I have always loved the maple leaf block pattern. Except it is usually is a 12" block....way too big. So when my TBLOVERS2 group had a table runner swap and my quilting partner loved fall and reds and greens, it dawned upon me I could reduce the maple leaf. I designed and made this table runner.

The last few weeks I have been enjoying watching the birds in the backyard. We have 2 bird feeders. We had buntings, doves, brown headed cowbirds, grosbeaks, cardinals, thrashers and other birds visiting. It has been fun. For a couple of days now we have had a daddy cardinal teaching his 2 chicks to fly and eat. The first day the chicks were sitting on the peach tree limbs and daddy would grab some feed from the feeder and fly to the chicks and feed them. Last night he had the chicks eating on the feeders. They are still a bit clumsy.

The quilt I have chosen as my favorite is called

"Winters aren't Blue".

(Blue as in sad)

This quilt had many firsts. One was that I had joined a Quilt Bee. I didn't even know that any bees existed anymore. The fellowship of quilters was great. One of the projects of the group was that a quilt pattern was given out each month and members were to make the block. Wow this made me try new techniques. I also wanted to make a mostly blue and white quilt. I had learned a new technique in a quilt class my 1st ever quilt class, on invisible machine applique.

I had bought a quilt book by Margaret Rolfe and fell in love with this duck pattern

I used antique linens for the 1st time

and fussy cut and sharp star points

And pieced back.

And close stitching

Part 1 : CATCHING UP

On March 9th I had a day sleep study. Actually they don't let you sleep. It consisted of what is suppose to be five intervals of 40 mins that you sit don't wiggle giggle, sing, talk, move or do anything that would help you stay awake with 2 hour break time in between that you can do anything to stay awake. Of course during the 2 hour periods I quilted...no problem there. However those 40 minutes didn't exist not for me any way. I lasted less than 10 minutes on all but one. The nasty mean thing about it was once you go to sleep for more than 30 secs they wake you up. So I stayed extremely tired all day. So now I am trying a new medicine to see if I can stay awake during the day. So far so good.

On March 10th I had bladder surgery. It has been followed with 2 UTI infections, kidney stones and self cath. No fun! The verdict is still out on if it was worth doing the surgery.

This is a top I finished from lottery and Charity blocks from my TBLovers 2 group. The top is going to the LA quilter and then to the Children's Home. I love the way the block combination makes your eye dance.

This month I finished the last three sections, sewed the sashing, first dark border and the rail border. It is awaiting its finial border.

N2 Quilting Initial Challenge

My Colors

Teal green, Tan, Dark red, Dark brown, Goldenrod & Green

My Fabrics

To begin with I thought I would make a teapot quilt…
But after working with the design I decided I wanted to save the teapots for some pretty delicate florals.
A pattern I bought while visting TN had been speaking to me. So my inspiration
came from the This and That Prairie Star pattern.

I changed the actual center block to
Dutchman’s Puzzle

Then I made 4 flying geese blocks
The pattern had these blocks made up from HST.

Using the pattern's idea I designed my corner squares
Making fried egg flowers
These were machine appliquéd.

Then putting all the parts together

I really like the way the center medallion has came out.
I want to make my top bigger than the original pattern.
Also,I want kind of a theme to follow.
So I decided to make some flying geese to go on my 2nd round.
Thinking I would use my extra HST for the 1st round.

After completing a few Flying geese and HSTand sewing the HST round I changed my mind
And wanted the 1st round to be Flying Geese
So I had to rip out the rows of HST blocks (Oh how I hate ripping) and cut out more pieces for FG.
Finally 1st round added.
In the corners are Shoo fly blocks.

After another plain border and added HST round.

This is as far as it is done. Now I’m deciding if I want to just add a plain border or one with appliqué, make it lapsize or go bigger. A lot depends on if I can find more fabric like the tan and goldenrod. I used all but a little bitty pieces. Do you think the fabrics need to match or be the same? Do you think the top needs to be bigger?

Here are my 2 color challenge blocks for the TB/ Moda Bee. Shades of Violet and brown I remade the Jacob's Ladder, because I fudged too much on the colors of the the first one. Cats and Mice is the 2nd block. 3rd is a TB SnowFlake. I still don't care for this color combination. yuks!

Next I worked on some charity blocks. The block is called Ozark Trail. It is suppose to be done in 2 fabrics. My 1st one is, but I wanted mine to spark so I added.

My 1st Dear Jane block (triangle). I bought the Dear Jane book back in 98 or 99 and have read through it and admired the work. But until now haven't made a single block. This one is for my friend Mel. I'm also swapping some cottages with her. Pictured is one of them and directions can be found at

Here it is the last day (night) of January and only one post. So much for blogging more often. But in my defence I have been busy sewing.

One of the groups I belong to make members a 6" heart block, HOF (Heart of Friendship) to share joy or sorrow with other members of the group. This is one I made this month.

This next block is 9" Friendship Star

variation and is a for a friend in another group.We are swapping One on One.

Here is my youngest son,Paul's birthday present.
I had planned on making 3 of my sons rag quilts for Christmas but time got away. Paul turned 23 this month.

I can't believe we are already in the year 2009. Where has the time gone? It is day 9 of January. Whew!

Well I got my top done and pinned together. I really like the pint size. It will make a good lap size or baby quilt. OH! don't look to closely. When I went to trim my mitered corners my scissors (not me) cut where they weren't suppose to... so there is a flower in the top right border.

I can't believe it has been more than a month since I posted. Things here have been super hectic. Four members of my immediate family have had serious medical problems. Two of them wound up in the hospital. Right now everyone is stable and at home. I have enjoyed the last 3 nights at home. I have especially enjoyed the cooler days and nights. Fall is my favorite time of the year.

Now to my Quilt fun!

I have my 3rd section of Hometown Christmas completed.

I have my Thimbleberries /Moda bee top completed.

Round two of my nesting Sunbonnet Sue.

I am also working on a puppy quilt. It is hand embroidered. All puppies are completed.
